6 Elements of a Detective Story

1. The detective must be memorable: they must be clever and have eccentric qualities about them that make them stand out

2. The crime must be significant: often a murder or a great theft, one that is worthwhile for the detective to solve

3. The criminal must be a worthy opponent: detective must be met with an intellectual equal

4. All suspects, including the criminal, must be presented early in the story: criminal is one of the main characters, not a side character that is suddenly dropped into the story at the last moment

5. All clues discovered by the detective must be known by the reader: a kind of "fair play" rule so that the reader has the opportunity to solve the mystery as well

6. When it is explained by the detective, the solution must appear logical and obvious: reader must be able to see how the pieces of the puzzle fit together
